NMPP Energy awards Denver, Iowa with Project of Year award

NMPP Energy awarded the City of Denver, Iowa, with a Project of the Year Award for its Underground Electric Distribution System Conversion Project at its Annual Conference in Lincoln, Neb., March 18.

The award is presented annually to honor a project or program in an NMPP Energy member community that creates a more cohesive community, whether it is a project created for the entire community or one that makes it easier for city staff and employees to serve their customers.

The City of Denver, Iowa, is a participant of the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska, the wholesale electric supplier of NMPP Energy.

The multi-phase project is part of the City’s Capital Improvement Plan, that was completed in 2021. Phase I of the project consisted of converting the city’s electric distribution system from overhead lines to underground in the oldest part of the City. The City worked with engineering contractors in designing and boring for the electric lines as well as the electric meter cutover. Phase I of the new underground system was energized in 2025.

City employees are now taking down overhead wires, transformers and other equipment. New street lights will then be installed by City employees. Phase II of the project was approved by the City Council in February and work should begin this fall.

The City has received many positive comments regarding the project, which will serve residents for many years to come.

Along with recognition at NMPP Energy’s Annual Conference, the City received $200, which will be donated to a community project or program of its choice.
