Whelan Energy Center Unit 2 (WEC2) is a 220-megawatt, coal-fired generating unit located two miles east of Hastings, Neb., next to the existing site of Whelan Energy Center Unit 1. The unit became commericial operational in May 2011. Project construction began in 2006.
MEAN’s output share of WEC2 is 80 megawatts (36 percent). WEC2 is owned and operated by the Public Power Generation Agency, which consists of five public power entities including MEAN. Other PPGA members are Heartland Consumers Power District, Hastings Utilities, Grand Island Utilities and Nebraska City Utilities.
