Load Management

The energy industry is more volatile today than any other time in history. Stable costs with slow-rising price escalators and sufficient product availability are no longer given facts of life. We are now in an environment requiring us to manage every kilowatt of electricity purchased with a bolder sense of responsibility. Recent increases in wholesale power costs make this more important each and every day.

Load management is the practice of managing your community’s peak electrical demand. Peak electrical demand can be reduced by using NMPP’s computer based software application, allowing your community to hold down its wholesale power costs..

How Does It Work

Load Management is used by a utility to reduce peak electric demand by managing specified electric load during peak load conditions, in an effort to reduce demand charges, transmission and wheeling costs. By monitoring the electric load, control can be accomplished through direct or indirect control methods.

Direct control involves installing control equipment to automatically shed load by sending radio signals from a master control station. The master controller monitors the total system load and sends out control signals when the system reaches a shed level determined by the operator.

Indirect control involves contacting the customer by phone, media or some other form and requesting they temporarily shut down an electric load for a short period of time to reduce peak demand.

Loads that can be interrupted for short periods of time are air conditioning, water heaters, municipal wells, irrigation wells, grain dryers or electric heat. Additional information is available on initiating a load management program.
